Quotes #NCBD 1/27/2016 (@BoomStudios)

It’s sci-fi and fantasy week at Boom!Studios. At least it is for me. Two titles this week: Wild’s End: The Enemy Within #5 and Venus #2. Plus Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Dragons #2 from last week.

Sacrifices are made in Wild’s End encounter with an invading alien force; and intrigue and secrets abound in the nascent colonization of Venus by NASA’s possible last heroes.

I highly recommend both. Buy ’em!

Here are the quotes:

“Time passes slowly in captivity, and in the darkness … The ambiguous darkness that is my current boon and my constant doom.”

“It is all vanity and resentment … and hubris.”

“All is light … until there is only darkness.”

“The books are not like this.”

Two new books from Boom!Studios this past Wednesday: the murderous conclusion to Rowan’s Ruin and the second issue for Snow Blind.  Both were good reads. I was sad to see Rowan’s Ruin come to an end, but Ollie Masters got my attention as he dug deeper into the WitPro mystery.

Here are the quotes:

“Why did nobody even ask about the dogs?”

Another new Boom!Studios four issue miniseries; but this one has on going series written all over it. Contract Killers never get old. Or do they?

Here are the quotes:

“They Let Anyone Join the Club These Days?”

“No One’s Got Any Sense of Duty Anymore.”

The Last Contract #1, Boom!Studios

The brothers try to make a run for it, with Sara in tow, who only speaks English using Star Wars references in Johnson’s dystopian The Last Sons of America #2.

Welcome Back is now an ongoing series! And the Sequels Mali &Tessa continue their ultra violent reincarnated Battle Royale.

Here are the quotes:

“Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper” — nice #StarWars   reference

Quotes #NCBD 12/23/2015 (@BoomStudios)

The holidays are nearly over, and I got a nice thick stack of comics to make my way through before year end, but I did catch up with my Boom!Studios comics.

I look to them primarily for two genres: crime noir and sci-fi. This past week I picked up three sci-fi titles (after all comic books and sci-fi go together like bread and butter).

Venus #1 chronicles the colonization of Mars by a US team of space explorers competing against a superior China Space Program. This is not a what if, but more of a what may likely be.

Arcadia is a virtual world of uploaded human souls, who are aware of their new digital existence.  The catch: true power still remains in the hands of the few and the subservient ‘Meat’ continue to exist to serve and maintain the virtual world.

I can’t wait to see this one as animated feature.  It’s H.G. Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’ meets ‘Animal Farm’. This is the second chapter of ‘Wild’s End’ titled ‘The Enemy Within’. It’s already on issue #4 of 6. If you missed this one, pick up the graphic novel.

Here are the quotes:

“When you’re a kid you’re encouraged to think of human lives as stories. You know the drill: Be good, study hard, and you might enjoy ten whole minutes of Happily Ever After before they find a lump in your prostate.”

“What do these desperate rubes give you for your wolf tickets …”

Arcadia #7, Boom!Studios
Written by: Alex Paknadel
Illustrated by: Eric Scott Pfeiffer
Letters by: Colin Bell

“Now it’s time for America to cut a path to the future, to ensure that our way of life endures.”

Venus #1, Boom!Studios
Written by: Rick Loverd
Illustrated by: Huan Danlan
Colors by: Marcio Menyz
Letters by: Colin Bell

“Le bon Dieu est dans le detail.”

Wild’s End: The Enemy Within #4, Boom!Studios

Quotes For #NCBD 12/09/2015 (@BoomStudios)

Ollie Masters’ and Tyler Jenkins’ new winter land noir crime story, Snow Blind, is finally released this week. It’s got an Alaskan teenage library breaker-enterer whose whole world is about to be turned upside down when he learns his family is in the witness protection plan. Jenkins’ cold ‘scapes are awesome … and why did they have to shoot the dog?

SnowBlindNo1

Here are the quotes:

“…I felt more comfortable around the pages of dead authors than I do my own parents.”

“No one knows anyone, and why would you want to. We’ve all got bad beneath it all. Why put that out in the world.”

Ollie Masters, with Art by Tyler Jenkins, Snow Blind #1, @BoomStudios

Quotes For #NCBD 12/02/2015 (@BoomStudios)

I picked up two @BOOMSTUDIOS titles this week.  Both were excellent.

What self-respecting eighties kid did not love Jim Henson. He gifted to our world Sesame Street (Grover, Oscar the Grouch, Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, and Big Bird), The Muppet Show (Kermit the Frog, Rowlf the Dog, and Ernie), Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth.

He also created The StoryTeller, a British live-action/puppet television series that originally aired in 1988. It retold European folk tales using a combination of actors and puppets. I have to confess I’ve never seen it. I think I may have heard of it, but that could be wishful thinking on my part–but now I’m on a quest to dig these old episodes up.

Thanks to @BOOMSTUDIOS and @Archaia for bringing The Storyteller stateside via their graphic novels and comic books. In its latest iteration, the focus is on dragons; and whats not to love–mythic tales of dragons told with humor and pathos.

Rowan’s Ruin, on the other hand, is about a young American woman taking on the paranormal in the UK. The mystery takes a twisted turn, as Katie raids the “microfiches one last time.”

Here are the quotes:

“Most fathers often struggle with being too hard or too soft on their children.”

“His father’s love knew no bounds. Everything he had done was for him.”

Story and Art by Daniel Bayliss, Scripted by Fabian Rangel Jr., Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Dragons #1, BOOM!STUDIOS

“So. Hamlet. Wow. He’s like a mirror for the whole human condition, isn’t he.”

“I’m gonna raid the microfiches one last time.”

Mike Carey, with Art by Mike Perkins, Rowan’s Ruin #3, BOOM!STUDIOS

QUOTES FOR #NCBD 11/18/2015 (BOOM COMICS)

I picked up two @boomstudios titles this week: ‘Welcome Back’ and ‘Cognetic’.  I caught up with Welcome Back halfway through on issue #3; but I was lucky to pick up back issues #1 and #2 @midtowncomics. I was hearing a lot of buzz about ‘Welcome Back’ on the net and twitter’s comic book gossip vine, so I added it to my pull list.

Sebela’s ‘Welcome Back’ is yet another must read from@boomstudios. It’s a well written cross between Mark Millar’s ‘Wanted’ and Ronald D. Moore’s ‘Battle Star Galactica’s’ Cylon resurrection program. It’s got secret societies, assassins, and a resurrective global conspiracy spanning centuries.

memetic

Tynion “Numero Cuatro” continues his apocalyptic psychological warmongering in Cognetic. If you haven’t read ‘Memetic’, pick up the TPB. There’s a theme here–or was it a meme–and it’s all horrifically interconnected.

Here are the quotes (some catching up on ‘Welcome Back’)

“Like the scent of a lover, the singularity of their touch. We dance like old friends.”

“Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated? Like you were born too early or too late? Yeah that’s Normal.”

Christopher Sebela, with Art by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer, Welcome Back No. 1, BOOM!STUDIOS

“I use to wonder if it really was better in the good old days, and it wasn’t. People have always been people. Now they’re just more open about it.”

Christopher Sebela, with Art by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer & Claire Roe, Welcome Back No. 2, BOOM!STUDIOS

“I want to win without losing my soul. Though I’d settle for my life.”

“Lack of information. Why did we even bother to invent social networking if you’re not going to use it properly.”

Christopher Sebela, with Art by Claire Roe,Welcome Back No. 3, BOOM!STUDIOS

“This wasn’t a gift brother, we took it like the animals we are. We’re not any different, any better.”

James Tynion IV, with Art by Eryk Donovan, Cognetic No. 2, BOOM!STUDIOS
