Interlude 2017

It’s been a while since my last blog.  A lot has happened.  Trump, for better or worse is our president, my job has been reorganized and I lost a few peers in the workplace, and sadly … my dog passed.  As a result my comic book readings stalled for a while (and piled up in a dark recess of my home), as I dealt with some difficult life changing events.   Thankfully my pull list @MidtownComics remained in place.

Nonetheless, I’ve made some changes to my comic book reading preferences between now and then.  Their is now a marked decrease in my weekly Marvel pulls (still some gems there though); but I also made some new additions across some DC and Independent titles.

I’m also going to try a different tact within this blog.  I’ll continue publishing quotes, but now will do so within a written review–seems to be the thing to do to sing the praises of your favorite current book.  The reviews will use a basic 10 scale scoring system, with a ‘BUY’ or ‘READ’ recommendation (albeit it will be more intuition than science for me).

Also, unless I say otherwise, you can safely assume I purchased any book I review.  I’m not for sale; I buy my comics with my hard earned dollars workin’ for The Man.  In addition, I plan to change the look and feel of this blog site, but that’s a work in progress–keep an eye out for that, it’s coming sooner than you think.

AND in that vein check out my first review of 2017 on 451 Media’s Red Dog #3

REVIEW: Red Dog #3 – 451 Media

What’s better than a robotic dog with a 6668 Quantum Processor brain and Nikocell S474
camera eyes … a networked pack of robotic dogs with 6668 Quantum Processor brains RedDog3_Back2 1and Nikocell S474 cameras eyes.  In Rob Cohen’s Red Dog, adapted by Andi Ewington, the wolfpack takes on a new meaning as this team of cyber hounds come together under young Kyle’s expert training.RedDog3_Hounds

This cinematic and entertaining western themed sci-fi read comprises all the good basics: an off-world mining colony on the dusky planet Kirawan; shared by its new human residents and primitive war-like indigenous bug-eyed alien population. Kyle, the only child on the planet, does his best to survive amongst the adult population, alongside his superior engineered robotic K-9 companions, and slightly dysfunctional family.

The plot is familiar, but the vivid visuals and fast-paced story telling keeps you hooked wanting for more.  After all. who can’t relate to the love of a young boy for his android dogs.

451 Media’s s6x #7 and #8

Running a few weeks behind, I finally managed to catch up with my stack, closing the book on the final two issues of s6x.  Written by George Pelecanos and Andi Ewington, with art by Ty Dazo and Mack Chater (and covers by Ben Oliver) this mini-series pushed McQuade’s team to its Zen ending of no ending.  Sacrifices were made, battles were won and lost, and secrets were revealed; but the war against the Cartel continues.

This is a fantastic action-packed read, especially if you are into the special operations military genre.  If you missed the print copies, check out their website for digital details; and perhaps, who knows, a TPB offering may be in the works for the future.  I’ll keep an eye out for you.

Here is the final quote:

Picked up Bad Moon Rising #5.  It’s really a shame that this is only a six issue limited series. This one was filling that gaping show hole left over by the season finale of Sons of Anarchy.

You can read my review at graphicpolicy.com for more details:

It’s sci-fi and fantasy week at Boom!Studios. At least it is for me. Two titles this week: Wild’s End: The Enemy Within #5 and Venus #2. Plus Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Dragons #2 from last week.

Sacrifices are made in Wild’s End encounter with an invading alien force; and intrigue and secrets abound in the nascent colonization of Venus by NASA’s possible last heroes.

I highly recommend both. Buy ’em!

Here are the quotes:

“Time passes slowly in captivity, and in the darkness … The ambiguous darkness that is my current boon and my constant doom.”

“It is all vanity and resentment … and hubris.”

“All is light … until there is only darkness.”

“The books are not like this.”

Quotes #NCBD 1/27/2016 (@451official)

Picked up one new title this week (s6x #3), plus two from last week: Sunflower #3 and ExMortis #3 (I still see a few issues left on the rack so buy ’em if you missed ’em, before they are gone).

In the latest installment from Pelecanos’ and Ewington’s s6x, McQuade recruits more former squad members to Sarah’s cause. The team is slowly coming together for the battle against Señor Martinez’s Cartel. Kind of like a Guns N’ Roses reunion tour, except with real Guns and Roses.

Here are the quotes:

“Nothing like a bit of hillwalking to blow the years of saturated civilian life out of the arteries.”

Quotes #NCBD 1/13/2016 (@BoomStudios)

Two new books from Boom!Studios this past Wednesday: the murderous conclusion to Rowan’s Ruin and the second issue for Snow Blind.  Both were good reads. I was sad to see Rowan’s Ruin come to an end, but Ollie Masters got my attention as he dug deeper into the WitPro mystery.

Here are the quotes:

One key title out this week as the new ‘The Kill List‘ arc begins in ‘X-O Manowar‘ #43.

Aric and Ninjak team up to assassinate Vine “Planting” Agents who conspire to destroy all humankind; but I got a funny feeling somebody is getting played …
