Interlude 2017
It’s been a while since my last blog. A lot has happened. Trump, for better or worse is our president, my job has been reorganized and I lost a few peers in the workplace, and sadly … my dog passed. As a result my comic book readings stalled for a while (and piled up in a dark recess of my home), as I dealt with some difficult life changing events. Thankfully my pull list @MidtownComics remained in place.
Nonetheless, I’ve made some changes to my comic book reading preferences between now and then. Their is now a marked decrease in my weekly Marvel pulls (still some gems there though); but I also made some new additions across some DC and Independent titles.
I’m also going to try a different tact within this blog. I’ll continue publishing quotes, but now will do so within a written review–seems to be the thing to do to sing the praises of your favorite current book. The reviews will use a basic 10 scale scoring system, with a ‘BUY’ or ‘READ’ recommendation (albeit it will be more intuition than science for me).
Also, unless I say otherwise, you can safely assume I purchased any book I review. I’m not for sale; I buy my comics with my hard earned dollars workin’ for The Man. In addition, I plan to change the look and feel of this blog site, but that’s a work in progress–keep an eye out for that, it’s coming sooner than you think.

Quotes #NCBD 3/23/2016 (DC’s Batman No. 50)
It’s been over two months since I last blogged on this site–just in time for #NCBD 3/30/16 tomorrow. Bruce Wayne is back, so I’m coming back. Nothing against Scott Snyder, who is one of the best comic book writers out there right now, but I wasn’t really digging the whole Jim Gordon as Batman in the Power Suit thing. I am glad to have good old Bruce back, with some really cool quotes:

Quotes For #NCBD 12/02/2015 (DC Vertigo)
Yet another #nerdconfession to make. I don’t always read all my books the week I get ’em. Sometimes I buy more books than I can possibly read over a weekend; or other times life’s obligations get in the way, so I have to put them to the side til the next available time slot.
Usually when I do that, I’ll wait til I’m 3-5 issues deep in a series, and then I’ll binge read ’em all. Such was the case with Survivors’ Club #’s 1-3. Issue #3 came out this week, and last night, unable to sleep, I read ’em all.
I was hooked from the first page as I read:
“Something bad happened to every one of us in 1987.”
Something bad happened to me too in 1987–I graduated from High School at the age of 16, and was thrust into college life wholly unprepared.
This one is bringing back a lot of memories: BBSs, Strip Poker on Amiga Commodore Computers, Arcades, and 80’s horror films. Some of these memories are welcomed, some are best forgotten–it is apropos that the evil arcade game in this book is named after ‘Akheron’, the ‘river of pain’ (one of the five rivers of the Greek Underworld).
The other two DC Vertigo titles I picked up were The Sheriff of Babylon and Unfollow.
Tom King’s name is ringing out everywhere. Supposedly this guy is ex-CIA, so nothing but positive reviews here–he can make me disappear. Just kidding … maybe?
Well, at least his writing is indeed really good. Really good. The Sheriff of Babylon is like Detective Comics set in Iraq. Makes sense since there seems to be some sort of precedent for that: spies becoming good writers (Chris Marlowe, Hemingway, Roald Dahl, Peter Matthiessen, Graham Greene, and Ian Fleming to name a few). Must be something about the attention to detail.
Rob William’s ‘Unfollow’ is moving along at a rapid clip, but not fast enough for me. The suspense is killing me. Right now I am rooting for the grizzly badass Deacon to win it all.

A young Superboy begins to blossom in Kansas in Landis’ Superman American Alien.
The Darkseid War one-shots continue to roll-out. I highly recommend the Green Lantern one-shot for it’s heartbreaking side story penned by Tom King. The Shazam one-shot is worth a look too
Twilight Children No. 2 and Slash & Burn No.1 from DC Vertigo are also a must read from this past week.
