Interlude 2017
It’s been a while since my last blog. A lot has happened. Trump, for better or worse is our president, my job has been reorganized and I lost a few peers in the workplace, and sadly … my dog passed. As a result my comic book readings stalled for a while (and piled up in a dark recess of my home), as I dealt with some difficult life changing events. Thankfully my pull list @MidtownComics remained in place.
Nonetheless, I’ve made some changes to my comic book reading preferences between now and then. Their is now a marked decrease in my weekly Marvel pulls (still some gems there though); but I also made some new additions across some DC and Independent titles.
I’m also going to try a different tact within this blog. I’ll continue publishing quotes, but now will do so within a written review–seems to be the thing to do to sing the praises of your favorite current book. The reviews will use a basic 10 scale scoring system, with a ‘BUY’ or ‘READ’ recommendation (albeit it will be more intuition than science for me).
Also, unless I say otherwise, you can safely assume I purchased any book I review. I’m not for sale; I buy my comics with my hard earned dollars workin’ for The Man. In addition, I plan to change the look and feel of this blog site, but that’s a work in progress–keep an eye out for that, it’s coming sooner than you think.
AND in that vein check out my first review of 2017 on 451 Media’s Red Dog #3 …
Quotes For #NCBD 12/09/2015 (@Marvel)
To quote Al Ewing, “The word of the day is ‘Cosmic‘.” I finally caught up with my Marvel stack. There are at least two weeks worth of reading in this post, so there is some overlap from last week’s releases.
The comic book world’s ex-spy Tom King dreams up a dark suburban Vision.
Daredevil is back, a little meaner, with Matt Murdoch now a grizzly battle hardened prosecutor–plus a sidekick.

Deadpool goes all detective to find the traitor who set him up.

QUOTES FOR #NCBD 11/25/2015 (MARVEL COMICS)
I had a hard time picking my favorite Marvel pick of the week. It came to a tie between Jeff Loveness’ ‘Groot’ #6, and Brandon Montclare’s & Amy Reeder’s ‘Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur.’ Both titles are a far cry from Marvel’s standard fair of New York based superhero and villain mash ups–not that I don’t enjoy those, but sometimes I need a breath of fresh air outside of my violence filled reading bubble.
I want to quote all of Groot #6, but that just isn’t appropriate. Pick this one up if you can; this final issue made me laugh and cry at the same time. Groot’s and Rocket’s space road trip comes to an end, with Groot finally finding a lost friend.
‘Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur’ promises to be another uplifting book, showcasing a lovable, strong, and intelligent young female lead. Plus it has Jack Kirby’s Devil Dinosaur and Moon-Boy who according to Wikipedia made their debut in the Marvel Universe back in 1978. Its original incantation wasn’t successful, but it may have better luck this time around with Lunella Lafayette, a.k.a. Moon Girl.
I also picked up ‘All New Wolverine’ issues #1 & #2. Yet another #nerdconfession to make. I was originally planning to skip this one–the whole ‘Death of Wolverine’ thing left me nonplussed. But all the reviews were positive, so I picked it up. I got the ‘boss’ hip-hop variant for issue #1. I am glad I did, and it is now in my pull list @MidtownComics.
I’m also reading Bendis’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ #2 this week. Hala, the last super-powered Kree Accuser and Punisher, is on the brink of destroying not one, but two planets–and she can if she wants to.
Here are the quotes:
“You’re the Wookie obviously. I’m the cool guy in the vest who shoots stuff.”
“If you’re going to Earth …party with the X-Men.”
“The powerful always justify their actions against the weak.”
“If you have the courage to leave your old life … if you take that risk , and jump into the unknown … what you find will amaze you … there are much better places than home.”
“Life is not about the shadow you cast on your enemies … but the shade you provide to your friends.”
“I am Groot.”
Jeff Loveness, with Art by Brian Kessinger, Groot No. 6, Marvel Comics
“My brain is all the superpower I need.”
Brandon Montclare & Amy Reeder, with Art by Natacha Bustos, Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur No. 1, Marvel Comics
“An eye for an eye. A planet for a planet.”
Brian Michael Bendis, with Art by Valerio Schiti, Guardians of the Galaxy No. 2, Marvel Comics
“And you have a boyfriend with wings, you totally get to exploit that.”
Tom Taylor, with Art by David Lopez & David Navarrot, All New Wolverine No. 2, Marvel Comics
QUOTES FOR #NCBD 11/11/15 (MARVEL COMICS)
‘The Ultimates’ was not originally in my Pull List, but I started hearing a lot of buzz online about this one, so I went out and picked it up the next day after #ncbd. I was blown away! If it keeps up the momentum, this is gonna be one badass Marvel hero team book.
The Illuminati No. 1 is the villainous flip side to the Marvel World. What is the Hood up to?
‘Secret Wars’ is only one issue away from the end, but the new post-war titles are already coming out.
The murder mystery finally gets solved in Thors No. 4, and I can’t wait for the series to begin again in its regularly scheduled time slot. I’ve been a fan of Thor since the Walt Simonson days, and the Goddess of Thunder can do no wrong in my book.
An old grizzly Hawkeye (Clint) makes his debut, alongside Hawkeye (Kate). ‘Hawkeye’ No. 1 is written by Jeff Lemire, so it can’t disappoint.
Spider Gwen. Captain America, and the Falcon take on the Lizard in ‘Spider Gwen’ No. 2. This series is hot.
Here are the quotes:
“What good is having deadly designer genes–if all you ever kill is time?”
Spider Gwen No. 2 (2015), Jason Latour with Art by Robbi Rodriguez, Marvel Comics
“Trust Me. Death is just a different kind of journey …”
Secret Wars No. 7, Jonathan Hickman with Art by Esad Ribic, Marvel Comics
“In times like this, there is nothing to do but laugh and call down the storm, and when you bleed, laugh even more.”
Battleworld: Thors No. 4, Jason Latour, with Art by Chris Sprouse, Marvel Comics
“The pure stuff of creation was not compatible with the world we knew.”
The Ultimates No. 1, Al Ewing, with Art by Kenneth Rocafort, Marvel Comics
