Interlude 2017

It’s been a while since my last blog.  A lot has happened.  Trump, for better or worse is our president, my job has been reorganized and I lost a few peers in the workplace, and sadly … my dog passed.  As a result my comic book readings stalled for a while (and piled up in a dark recess of my home), as I dealt with some difficult life changing events.   Thankfully my pull list @MidtownComics remained in place.

Nonetheless, I’ve made some changes to my comic book reading preferences between now and then.  Their is now a marked decrease in my weekly Marvel pulls (still some gems there though); but I also made some new additions across some DC and Independent titles.

I’m also going to try a different tact within this blog.  I’ll continue publishing quotes, but now will do so within a written review–seems to be the thing to do to sing the praises of your favorite current book.  The reviews will use a basic 10 scale scoring system, with a ‘BUY’ or ‘READ’ recommendation (albeit it will be more intuition than science for me).

Also, unless I say otherwise, you can safely assume I purchased any book I review.  I’m not for sale; I buy my comics with my hard earned dollars workin’ for The Man.  In addition, I plan to change the look and feel of this blog site, but that’s a work in progress–keep an eye out for that, it’s coming sooner than you think.

AND in that vein check out my first review of 2017 on 451 Media’s Red Dog #3

Quotes #NCBD 1/27/2016 (@ValiantComics)

Catching up on my Valiant Titles; fell behind, so quoting two titles from last week: Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #3 and Imperium #12.

This week I picked up Faith #1 (read my review at GraphicPolicy.com), and Bloodshot #10.

A new arc begins in Bloodshot the Analog Man. This one has a Mad Max look to it, but set in a future LA (with a special surprise guest at the end?)

One key title out this week as the new ‘The Kill List‘ arc begins in ‘X-O Manowar‘ #43.

Aric and Ninjak team up to assassinate Vine “Planting” Agents who conspire to destroy all humankind; but I got a funny feeling somebody is getting played …

Quotes #NCBD 12/23/2015 (@ValiantComics)

Not sure why they keep referring to Valiant Entertainment as Marvel 2.0. As far as I am concerned they are a whole different thing altogether standing on their own.

Three titles out this week:

Bloodshot #9 concludes the ‘Hunt’ arc, and leaves a mystery unanswered.

Jen Van Meter and Roberto de la Torre are back together for The Death Defying Doctor Mirage Second Lives mini series.

Rai # 12 wraps up the ‘Orphan’ arc, and sets the stage for the next blockbuster chapter 4001 AD–gotta wait til the summer of 2016 for the next installment though.

I also caught up with my Valiant titles from last week: Ivar Timewalker #12, Imperium #11, and Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #2.

Here are the quotes:

“Not sure teaming up with a gen-modded spider alien to Fight the Power was such a good idea.”

“Incendiary Fast-Strike Rounds have feelings too you know!!!”

Quotes For #NCBD 12/09/2015 (@ValiantComics)

Two superb titles this week from @ValiantComics: Ninjak #10 & Unity #25.

Ninjak goes all magical in his latest mission to the Darkside with Punk Mambo. And they brought Muscle.

Unity #25 Super Sized Spectacular pokes a little Christmas fun at the Valiant Universe. Pick it up for some good laughs.

Here are the quotes:

“Bloody Hell. Magic. Why does it have to be sodding Magic.”

“The Deadside is a cosmic supernatural plane of existence. How are you getting me there?”

“You been spendin’ too much time with X-O Manowar.”

“She’s the Muscle.”

Matt Kindt, with Art by Doug Braithwaite, Niinjak #10, Valiant Comics

“…And I Damn Sure won’t let them ruin America’s Greatest Beer–[Sponsorship Opportunity]”

James Asmus, with Art by Dan Schkade, Unity #25: Super Sized Spectacular – Woody and Quantum Go Hollywood, Valiant Comics

“Are you insane. You should be testing your pharmacological profiles constantly.”

QUOTES FOR #NCBD 12/02/2015 (VALIANT COMICS)

@ValiantComics is the ‘Michael Corleone’ of the comic book publishing industry. They are the overlooked younger brother, stepping up to take over the family business, and eliminating all enemies in the process.

Only one book out this week; X-O Manowar Commander Trill #0 gives us the low down on his origin story.

TrillNo0

As always, here is a quote:

“Put your faith in a trinket, if you must believe in something. At least that you can touch.”

Robert Venditti, with Art by Bit & Francis Portela, X-O Manowar Commander Trill No. 0, Valiant Comics.

QUOTES FOR #NCBD 11/25/2015 (VALIANT COMICS)

I’ve been reading comics off and on for close to thirty-five years now; and as you get a little older, you become just a little more mean, jaded, and cynical–no matter how hard you try to keep it positive. I’d ask myself, how many times can Robin die?  How many times can the multiverse collapse on itself? And if this War is so Secret, how come I’m hearing about it twice?

Nowadays, I read many of these climactic tales with a resigned, “Ho Hum.” After all, with a little time travel pixie dust, everything will be as good as new; I’ve come to expect the same old story.

So what do those smug bastards @ValiantComics do?  They sell me a time traveling book with panache–‘Ivar, Timewalker’.  They get a great writer, like Fred Van Lente, to script the tales, supplement it with sublime art from Pere Perez, and the rest is … well … time traveling literary history.

When I first picked it up, from issue #1, I was like … oh no … here we go again on the time traveling merry go round–“Et Tu @ValiantComics,” I cried. I only picked it up because I’ve been buying all their books since the start of this recent iteration of @ValiantComics, and the #psychonerd in me directed me to buy it.

At the very first read it became apparent that this time traveling little tome was different. The story was fresh and inventive; it was a recursive dream come true.  If you missed it, run out and get the back issues or TPB. You’ll thank me later.

The other excellent Valiant title out this week is ‘X-O Manowar Exodus’. Here we see Aric broker a temporary peace between Humanity and the refugee Vine–if only he were real and could do the same for our current crisis in the Middle East–but now he must ready himself for the coming confrontation with Commander Trill.

Here are the quotes:

“Each second is its own precious jewel. To be studied and admired. Not polluted with regrets for the past or fears for the future.”

“We are all beautiful in our way. And each moment …is the same as an eternity of them.”

Fred Van Lente, with Art by Pere Perez, ‘Ivar, Timewalker’, @ValiantComics

“I prefer to handle one worst-case scenario at a time.”

Robert Venditti, with Art by Rafa Sandoval, ‘X-O Manowar Exodus’, @ValiantComics
