I picked up two @boomstudios titles this week: ‘Welcome Back’ and ‘Cognetic’. I caught up with Welcome Back halfway through on issue #3; but I was lucky to pick up back issues #1 and #2 @midtowncomics. I was hearing a lot of buzz about ‘Welcome Back’ on the net and twitter’s comic book gossip vine, so I added it to my pull list.
Sebela’s ‘Welcome Back’ is yet another must read from@boomstudios. It’s a well written cross between Mark Millar’s ‘Wanted’ and Ronald D. Moore’s ‘Battle Star Galactica’s’ Cylon resurrection program. It’s got secret societies, assassins, and a resurrective global conspiracy spanning centuries.
Tynion “Numero Cuatro” continues his apocalyptic psychological warmongering in Cognetic. If you haven’t read ‘Memetic’, pick up the TPB. There’s a theme here–or was it a meme–and it’s all horrifically interconnected.
Here are the quotes (some catching up on ‘Welcome Back’)
“Like the scent of a lover, the singularity of their touch. We dance like old friends.”
“Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated? Like you were born too early or too late? Yeah that’s Normal.”
Christopher Sebela, with Art by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer, Welcome Back No. 1, BOOM!STUDIOS
“I use to wonder if it really was better in the good old days, and it wasn’t. People have always been people. Now they’re just more open about it.”
Christopher Sebela, with Art by Jonathan Brandon Sawyer & Claire Roe, Welcome Back No. 2, BOOM!STUDIOS
“I want to win without losing my soul. Though I’d settle for my life.”
“Lack of information. Why did we even bother to invent social networking if you’re not going to use it properly.”
Christopher Sebela, with Art by Claire Roe,Welcome Back No. 3, BOOM!STUDIOS
“This wasn’t a gift brother, we took it like the animals we are. We’re not any different, any better.”
James Tynion IV, with Art by Eryk Donovan, Cognetic No. 2, BOOM!STUDIOS
Is it me, or is Cognetic way better than Memetic? I really liked Memetic, I did; but Cognetic is shaping up to surpass it in all ways. Also, Tokyo Ghost #2 adds to the background story on Debbie and Constable Led Dent–my only question now is when do the Tokyo Ghost t-shirts come out? I’m holding my remarks on Ales Kot for that special future blog …
Oh, and check out Sunflower by Andy Ewington if you can get hold of a copy. Tight read and the art is like liquid light.
Still got some reading left, but here are the quotes so far:
“Really I’ve got lots of really good ideas. You should listen. I’m old you know.”
“It was freeing that singularity. It made us feel like what we did had some meaning. There wasn’t any of this grey crap.It was all color. It was all red.”
“It’s easy to get these insects to all start talking about the same thing. You just need to make them scared. When they’re scared, control is easy…”
– James Tynion IV, Cognetic No. 01
“No pious luddites are going to encroach on an American’s freedom of choice.”
“People want their tech. If they love it so much–how bad can it be.”
“Consumption gives human life meaning.”
– Rick Remender, Tokyo Ghost No. 02
“Isn’t it fascinating how the normals fool themselves into thinking they could one day transform into something more than what they already are?”
“Nobody knows anything. First rule of Hollywood and First rule of the World. People just convince themselves, they do to varying degrees of success. But really .. nobody knows anything.”
– Ales Kot, Wolf No. 04
Finally made it through the rest of my stack; and I got a few quotes and honorable mentions.
I also want to add that just because I don’t quote from a comic, that doesn’t mean I enjoyed it any less. Jeff Lemire’s coming of age “Plutona” and Jay Faerber’s sci-fi western ‘Copperhead” are solid reads, and I recommend ’em wholeheartedly. I also picked up Mike Carey’s new mini series ‘Rowans Ruin’, which is setting up to be a good horror romp.
Lastly I just finished reading Ales Kot’s ‘Surface’ #4. I have a few quotes, but I’m going to save them for a later post. I want to reread ‘Change’, and then follow with another read of ‘Surface’ 1-4, because there is some sort of connection. Then again, maybe I am just old and confused, and imagining things,
Anyway here are the last of the quotes:
“In the Grand dance of creation and destruction, of entropy and irony, the worlds are ending and she is there for all of them.”
– Neal Gaiman, The Sandman Overture No. 06
“There’s a thrill right at the end of a mystery. No more secrets. No more lies. All that’s left is the chase.”
– James Tynion IV and Scott Snyder, Batman & Robin Eternal No. 01
“With Great Power … Comes Greater Speed, Storage and Battery Life.”
– Dan Slott, The Amazing Spiderman No. 01 (2015)
“Ideas of the fourth dimension and its strange geometry suggest that there are ‘corners’ of reality which may be in a higher mathematic space and not that evident to our perceptions.”
– Alan Moore, Providence No. 05
“I am Groot.”
– Jeff Loveness, Groot No. 05
